Still Lily Terraria at Etsy Stalker

Today we swing back into the low-maintenance sector with these stately terraria from Still Lily, as available on Etsy and spotted at etsystalker.com. I like the combination of ocean and desert elements- makes me think of some fossilized ocean in the middle of the desert. Very Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico.

Paula Hayes Moves from Terraria to Tableware

According to the NY Times the imitable grand poobah of terrariums- Paula Hayes- is now designing tableware akin to the biomorphic figures in which she builds her mini ecosystems. These funky glass-blown pieces are great for terrariums- I don't know if I would to drink wine out of it. I still like her style.

Have a Whale of a Terrarium from Anthro

I jumped the gun with my Anthropologie/UO Sea Urchin terrarium post. They have an "orca" shaped glass container as well. Doesn't look like a whale to me- looks more like a sack. Maybe if it had a fin or two I could whole-heartedly accept it as an interpretation on the whale theme... oh well.

So I thought I'd seen it all... until the terrarium footstool

That is typed correctly - peep this terrarium footstool. Wonder of all wonders- I truly thought when it comes to terrariums- I've seen it all. Enter Annalee and her blog ramblingsofagypsynomad and this utterly bizarre, utterly amazing terrarium-inspired footstool. I doubt live plants could live for long in it- but man o man. How could you not try?

This vintage footstool dates from the 1960s and features a very unique inside! A clear plastic side reveals a terrarium complete with grass, leaves and pink flowers. With a brown vinyl top and wood and metal legs, it has a blow up nozzle to keep it looking great through the years. This vintage foot stool stays inflated, is in great condition and makes a truly unique addition to any space!

Urban Outfitters/Anthro Urchin Terrarium

1.) It was only a matter of time before Urban Outfitters jumped on the terrarium bandwagon by selling terraria, especially since Anthropologie has been riding that wave for a while- at least they have had terrarium decorations in their stores for a while.

2.) It also seems like UO/Anthro has a lot of urchin-shaped items in their stores.

3.) Hence, the above Urchin Terrarium, container available at Antrhopologie Online.

Terradctl Terrarium

There is a new Etsy Shop focusing on terraria, aptly named Terradctl. I like what I see so far...

Newsbox Terrarium

Another wonderful repurposed object story: peep this wild illuminated terrarium nestled within a recycled newspaper box. It's adorable and eye catching but I'm not sure I'd really put it in my house. Artist Carlo Sampietro from The Street Is In The House explains his mode of operation:

“Each cabinet tells a story that blurs the lines between reality and fiction and explores the interaction between the city and the uninhibited human soul. They contain a manipulation of space that implores you to confront the uncomfortable, contemplate the inexplicable, and re-examine the predictable.”

How to Make a Hanging Succulent Terrarium

First OFF: apologies for my long, unexplained absence from the F&M. Life calls- and with plans for moving out of state looming in my future I took on (rather rashly) a garage sale. WOW that was a lot of work.

ANYHOO- I have visions of filling my new apartment with clouds of hanging plants. Starting with these adorable succulent terraria by Senorita from casasugar. They look a little less challenging than a bottle terrarium.

Mini Orchid Teardrop Terrarium from Orquivalle

Miniature orchids are hands-down cool. Pop your adorable, magical mini orchid into a teardrop terrarium and you have just entered "very cool" territory. Orquivalle.com can get you started with both your teardrop terrarium and a wee orchid of your own. You must supply the orchid know-how my friend, and then let me know-how too.

How to Display an Orchid Terrarium

I have the dreaded "black" thumb when it comes to indoor orchids. But I can't pretend that I haven't thought about trying to stick one in a terrarium. I alwayws feared that the roots would not get enough airflow. But it might be worth a try.

Enter CasaSugar's recent orchid-terrarium-tutorial, which looks fairly straight-forward. Pop an orchid in some spahgnum moss in a jar. The article clearly says this is a way to "display" orchids and but- does anyone think it could be a long-term solution?

CasaSugar: This technique only takes about 20 minutes to complete, and you'll cut down how much you need to feed your plant to about once every few months. No, I'm not joking. Want to learn how to display your orchids in terrariums?

Plant-based Air Purifier in the Chicago Times

Sweet! As in sweet pure air, formaldehyde-free created in your own home by this Andrea Air Purifier, as seen in the Chicago Tribune. I have seen a few of these plant-based air purifiers on the blog circuit but has anyone had any practical experience with them? It'll only set you back $200 buckers, according to Amazon. Well heck. I might just open a window.

The manufacturer says the system works faster than a plant alone and is more efficient than HEPA and carbon filters at filtering formaldehyde. And it looks a tad like a terrarium — which makes it more fun than your standard plastic-box air purifier.

Best plants for Terrariums at ShelterPOP

ShelterPOP offered a nice concise list of plant recommendations for terrarium-life. I'm horrible with official names of plants so these are not really ringing a bell for me. Anyone have any experience with any of these? Has anyone ever actually tried a bromeliad in a terrarium?

The following plants are suitable for a terrarium:

Pilea
Ferns
Begonias
Bromeliads
Dracaena
Chamaedora
Fittonia
Aphelandra
African Violets
Hedera
Clorophytum
