These amazing carved book landscape sculptures by Guy Laramee are not exactly terrariums in any general sense of the word.  However they offer the glimpse into a small imagined landscape that any good terrarium affords.  I encourage you to check out more about this artist and his work at Colossal Art &amp; Design.

I love the poetry in these inverted glass jar found terrariums, depicted in a tutorial by Amy Merrick on Design Sponge.  I think these would make great centerpieces for an event but I sincerely doubt they would live very long in such an enclosed environment sans air circulation. 

If you'd like to try this project out I suggest two additional steps:

1. I have a soft spot for plants that go bump in the night.  Well - you know what I mean - these suckers sure look like the stuff of nightmares!  I once tried to grow a Home Depot Sundew (Drosera) in a terrarium to little avail but this gentleman has got the mother of all carnivorous-plant-terrariums going on in this youtube video.  Love the variety and the vibrancy.

CB2.com, the funky little sister of Crate &amp; Barrel, has a plethora of vases and glass ornament-type containers that look dreamy for terrarium setups.  I cannot personally vouch for the structural stability of these cuties but the price is right at $6.95 each!  Have you had experience with CB2 glass vases for building terrariums?  Let me know!

Reporting from the overpriced world of Anthropologie - you too can own this festive terrarium pendant lamp for the mere price of $1,000 including tax.  Plants not included so make sure to pick some hardy arid succulents - I don't think you'd want to be misting water next to this arrangement too often.

I was disappointed in this bare-bones terrarium tutorial spotted at the HGTV website.  At least they included the note about sphagnum moss and charcoal to ensure filtration levels for the soil.

The October issue of National Geographic had an awesome photo essay of the lush enclosed environments in Australia's so-called "slot canyons."  Oversized ferns, moss backed boulders - it looks like a land lost to time and a wealth of terrarium fodder.  Check out the slide show at NatGeo!

Bloom IQ has a great introduction to terrarium care and creation.  The helpful sidebar on the right has some great quick tips including this one:


Small drops of condensation say you’ve got the right amount of water. Big drops indicate too much water; no drops indicate too little.
Nothing kills a terrarium faster than overwatering!

I love these repurposed wine bottle terraria housing a simple collection of mosses.  The bottle-on-its-side really lends itself to making the moss look like a miniature landscape. Here is a stunning example of the high art form to which us humble terrarium-makers can strive towards.  Lindsay Taylor and collaborators designed this terrarium, which has existed for some time on it's own. at Sacrificial Rabbitsdesigned this adorable "water" feature out of glass beads.  The scale of the beads is more appropriate-looking than the glass marbles.
