Yes I know moss is not the feature of this photo - but it is in there. This photo is courtesy of the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers website. I have yet to visit this conservatory located in beautiful Golden Gate Park but my sister promises that next time I'm in SF we will go. Here is the description of this "Tortoise" plant:
Dioscorea macrostachya... has a distinctive swollen base that can be several feet wide. A wild yam, this plant is the original source for the birth control pill.
