Q and A: Plant ID

Thanks to my sister Alyssa for this challenging Q and A

Question:

My friend has an indoor plant that is so cool and I really want to find out what it is. The plant has LONG vines (I believe hers is 3 or 4 years old and the vines reach halfway to the floor from where it sits on a shelf near the ceiling) that have leaves about an inch apart. The color of the leaves is a light green. I have attached a picture. My friend also claims it is incredibly hardy.

Answer:

Based on that lovely illustration I'm going to go with a pothos. You can find them at any home depot etc. in the house plant section and they will probably be in the hanging baskets. I have a "golden pothos" in my office at work and it is very easy to care for. The vines grow so fast and so long I am always cutting them off and starting new plants from the cuttings.

They have heart shaped leaves and some varieties have leaves that are almost as big as a dollar bill and some varieties have tiny heart shaped leaves- like maybe the size of a 50 cent piece.

If you feel patient you can even take a cutting from your friend's plant. Just snip a vine off the plant- pull the lower leaves off so that it has a stem and stick the stem in a cup of water in a windowsill. Within maybe 5 days you will see big roots come down and then you can plant it in soil!
