Happy Earth Day everyone! To celebrate I am including this wonderful photo of this beautiful old tree I found while wandering around on Upper State (random- I know- my car was in the shop). If only trees could tell stories- I bet this one has seen a lot. It was at least 3x as big as the surrounding ones and has to be hundreds of years old. It looked like it had been chopped down or blasted - but the greenery was still sprouting and it is still thriving!
Also thanks to my wonderful roomie Tamzen for sending me this link to a UCSB Daily Nexus article about a new campus composting program at UCSB. They are taking dining commons scraps and composting them with earthworms- how great! I have heard worm castings can repel whitefly from hibiscus and we lost our beautiful ancient hibiscus tree to whitefly last summer. Maybe I can protect the new growth on the stump if I get some of these!
